Summary
An outing to the Castlerigg Stone Circle, an evocative spot surrounded by the fells
Description
Leaving the market square, we make our way over the River Greta and by Fitz Park to the former Station Hotel. At this point we follow part of the former Penrith to Keswick railway which is now a bridleway. After a short while we leave it and walk by the A5271 and cross its junction with the A591. The ascent to the circle is via a quiet ‘B’ road. The stone circle is a great place to be, nestled in a bowl of fells with views to Derwent Water. We then follow Castle Lane and cross the A591, taking the path around Castlerigg Farm. Our descent is along the path through Springs Wood and the residential streets to the town centre.
Please check the weather and bring appropriate clothing (waterproofs and spare warm clothing), footwear and enough food and water. The leader reserves the right to turn away any walker not suitably equipped. The leader may cancel the walk or modify the route dependent on conditions.
