It is the responsibility of each walker to make sure they understand where to park. If you are not sure where the car parking/meeting point is, you must contact the walk leader at the latest the day before the walk. You should not rely on mobile phones or postcodes. There is often no mobile reception near walk meeting points and postcodes are for the nearest place nearby but should only serve as a guideline. Please allow plenty of time to find a parking space so that walks can start promptly.
Description: Overall once the initial steep ascent is completed the walk along the peaks is fairly easy going and the descent from Grisedale tarn is steady. Paths are generally well trodden but can be rocky and rough underfoot. Recommend sturdy boots. There are no facilities on the route so bring all the food and water you will need for the day. Grasmere at the finish has numerous eateries and watering holes. The walk leader will review the forecast and make a decision on Saturday morning if the walk will go-ahead on the Sunday. Please try to register by Friday.
Since this is a linier walk the intention is to use the Stagecoach 555 bus to arrive or return to the start. Summer26_555.pdf
Route: From the start past Stybeck Waterfall, up to Stybarrow Dodd the ascent (+650m) is steep although on relatively good ground (unpaved). Once the summit is reached, turn North for an out and back to Watsons Dodd to gain a nice view down St Johns and over to Keswick. Then due south along the summits of Raise, White Side, Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike, Seat Sandal. Here will offer a good view of Grasmere. A descent to Grasmere through Tongue Gill valley.
Dogs on a lead for the duration of the walk are welcome, please let the walk leader know in advance.
If you want to take a shorter route there are several options to descend earlier to the A591, such as White Side (8km), Helvellyn (10km) and Seat Sandal (14km). Indeed if the weather becomes poor these are the alternative descents allowing access to the 555 bus route.
Please check the weather and bring appropriate clothing (waterproofs and spare warm clothing), footwear and enough food and water. The leader reserves the right to turn away any walker not suitably equipped. The leader may cancel the walk or modify the route dependent on conditions.
New members: please note the walk leader may ask for more information about your walking experience. This is to ensure you have the fitness required to complete the walk that is planned safely.
