It is the responsibility of each walker to make sure they understand where to park. If you are not sure where the car parking/meeting point is, you must contact the walk leader at the latest the day before the walk. You should not rely on mobile phones or postcodes. There is often no mobile reception near walk meeting points and postcodes are for the nearest place nearby but should only serve as a guideline. Please allow plenty of time to find a parking space so that walks can start promptly.
Summary
Longsleddale is almost a forgotten valley, it offers a quiet access to Kentmere Pike and Harter Fell. There are lovely views over Windermere, Morecambe Bay, Cross Fell and Haweswater. given the long days at the present the walk pace will be moderate not hurried however I would like to be back before nightfall!
Description
From the village pick up the track heading towards Sadgill, past Stile End Farm. Where the track forks branch off SE and climb the Fellside path alongside Wray Crag, steep but short gaining height quickly onto the Ridge. Here the path gets a bit rocky under foot before easing out onto Shipman Knotts a summit scattered with small rocky knolls either side of the boundary wall.
We follow the wall fence north along the broad ridge (those bagging minor tops may detour off to Goat Scar) the crown is mostly soft grass with modest drop and rise before the final effort up to Kentmere Pike’s trig point and stile.
We will walk West along the ridge, following the ‘Wild Haweswater’ boundary and descend into the ridge saddle. Here there is an optional steep descent North to Small water (time permitting). after which returning via the same route to the saddle we will descend South via a loose rock zig-zagging path approximately 150-200m length which gently eases out into a well trodden bridleway descending back to the village. If time permits we will look at Force Jump (a small waterfall) before returning to the start point.
Optional Post walk meet at Staveley
Please check the weather and bring appropriate clothing (waterproofs and spare warm clothing), footwear and enough food and water. The leader reserves the right to turn away any walker not suitably equipped. The leader may cancel the walk or modify the route dependent on conditions.
