It is the responsibility of each walker to make sure they understand where to park. If you are not sure where the car parking/meeting point is, you must contact the walk leader at the latest the day before the walk. You should not rely on mobile phones or postcodes. There is often no mobile reception near walk meeting points and postcodes are for the nearest place nearby but should only serve as a guideline. Please allow plenty of time to find a parking space so that walks can start promptly.
Summary
A circular walk through the Great Langdale Valley, providing excellent views of the surrounding fells and valley head.
This walk is suitable for beginner’s / those who wish to avoid any fell / steep climbing. The walk will be undertaken at a leisurely pace.
Description
Leaving the car park we follow the footpath through the valley bottom eastwards to Great Langdale Beck. Crossing the beck we follow part of The Cumbria Way by the beck to Chapel Stile and then to Elterwater Village following well-used tracks and farm paths, usually fairly smooth and easy underfoot. We then head south along the road to Eltermere Hotel and ascend along the track through Sawrey’s Wood. Continuing westwards we walk through Baysbrown Wood and Hags Wood to Oak Howe. At Oak Howe we pick up part of The Cumbria Way again to Side House. The path then traverses a number of fields on the northern flank of Side Pike and through Great Langdale Campsite to the B5343. The last leg of the walk follows the path between Old Dungeon Ghyll and New Dungeon Ghyll along the valley bottom.
