Start point: National Trust Glen Mary Car Park, Tarn Hows, near Coniston
Car parking: Glen Mary car park is pay & display and managed by the National Trust. It can be busy even in winter, so please arrive early to secure a space. Car sharing is encouraged where possible. Please park considerately.
Description:
Starting from Glen Mary car park, we follow the path beside Tom Gill and climb a short rocky staircase through woodland to reach Tarn Hows. From here, we continue anti-clockwise around the tarn on well-maintained paths with beautiful views across the water and surrounding fells.
Part of the route follows a slightly higher path, giving broader panoramas before rejoining the main circuit and completing the loop back to the car park. The pace will be relaxed, with time for photographs and short rest stops.
Winter conditions can add atmosphere to this walk, but paths may be muddy, wet or icy in places. This is a shorter, gentle walk, ideal for a winter outing with the right clothing and footwear.
Bring a packed snack and a hot drink if you wish. Optional lunch at the Ship Inn nearby. (2 min drive from the car park)
