Car parking: There are lay-bys with free parking along the A591 east and north of Grasmere. For paid and display parking there is Stock Lane car park and Red Bank Car Park.
It is the responsibility of each walker to make sure they understand where to park. If you are not sure where the car parking/meeting point is, you must contact the walk leader at the latest the day before the walk. You should not rely on mobile phones or postcodes. There is often no mobile reception near walk meeting points and postcodes are for the nearest place nearby but should only serve as a guideline. Please allow plenty of time to find a parking space so that walks can start promptly.
Description: Our first stop is Town End and crossing the roundabout we pick up a very quiet country road that goes through White Moss Common and some woodland in the shadow of Nab Scar. We pick up the Coffin Route between Grasmere and Rydal Water and this track dips up and down as it hugs the bottom of Nab Scar. From here we get our first view of Rydal Water.
Once at the village of Rydal we will cross over a bridge to pick up the shoreline path of Rydal Water. This is a beautiful path situated between Nab Scar and Loughrigg Fell, while in the distance is Silver How and the higher Langdales beyond it.
We come to a stretch of woodland between Rydal Water and Grasmere and follow the paths there until coming to the southern shoreline of Grasmere Lake. It’s at this brief shoreline where we will see the view depicted in the walk description’s picture.
This is where the ascent begins as the path zigs and zags to reach Red Bank Road, and from there we follow the road and go past the YHA Langdale buildings until we get a brief view of Harrison Stickle and the Langdales. The ascent then continues as we at last enter the moorland reaching Dow Bank and finally Silver How (395 meters). Silver How is the only Wainwright of the walk and is a wonderful vantage point of the Langdales, Grasmere, Fairfield Range, Loughrigg Fell and the Coniston Fells.
The descent down arcs around eastwards and takes no more than an hour back to Grasmere. This is a reasonably leisurely walk which has a mixture of lake scenery, woodlands, moorlands and the lone fell.

Please check the weather and bring appropriate clothing (waterproofs and spare warm clothing), footwear and enough food and water. The leader reserves the right to turn away any walker not suitably equipped. The leader may cancel the walk or modify the route dependent on conditions.
