Ascent: About 1850 feet (564 meters).
Ramblers walk grading: B (Moderate).
Start point: High point of the moorland road connecting Ennerdale Bridge to Calder Bridge, this high point has a sharp bend from where (on the OS map) Whorl Gill begins. Google Map coordinates: 54°30’13.1″N 3°26’33.8″W (please contact the walk leader for additional directions)
Postcode: CA23 3AQ
Car parking: There are several lay-bys about the start point and within half a kilometre of it.
It is the responsibility of each walker to make sure they understand where to park. If you are not sure where the car parking/meeting point is, you must contact the walk leader at the latest the day before the walk. You should not rely on mobile phones or postcodes. There is often no mobile reception near walk meeting points and postcodes are for the nearest place nearby but should only serve as a guideline. Please allow plenty of time to find a parking space so that walks can start promptly.
Description: We immediately follow a moorland track that devolves into a thin path running along Whoap Beck. There is at first a gradual ascent followed by a moderate one as we curve around to the top of the high point of the day: Lank Rigg (541 meters). It has perhaps the best view of the rolling grassy hills and ridges separating Ennerdale from Wasdale plus a clear view of the sea too.
We then leave Lank Rigg for the hill of Whoap, which stands in the way of Crag Fell, before dipping down a bit and regaining some height to reach the top of Crag Fell (523 meters), but the best views are on the second summit (522 meters) as a glorious view of Ennerdale Water can be seen. Indeed Crag Fell offers the most spectacular views of the walk.
Heading west we follow the admittedly boggy path to Grike. The top of Grike (488 meters) does not have the spectacular views but a great view of the lower rolling hills and of the land as it merges into the sea. Grike is the third and final Wainwright of the walk.
For the return back we pick up a forest track and then take a few paths to get to the top of Blakeley Rise (389 meters), this is a very gentle ascent. The final part is a gradual descent down the tufty grass back to the start point. After the walk we can take a quick five minute drive to the village of Ennerdale Village and go to The Gather- a great café 😊.
