It is the responsibility of each walker to make sure they understand where
to park. If you are not sure where the car parking/meeting point is, you
must contact the walk leader at the latest the day before the walk. You
should not rely on mobile phones or postcodes. There is often no mobile
reception near walk meeting points and postcodes are for the nearest place
nearby but should only serve as a guideline. Please allow plenty of time to
find a parking space so that walks can start promptly.
Summary
This great linear walk is a hike through a couple of the central fells
starting from Watendlath, then going to the Wainwrights of High Tove, High
Seat, Bleaberry Fell and Walla Crag, before finishing in Kesick. The start
point is the car park in Watendlath Farm, and the end point will be
Lakeside Car Park in Keswick. Cars will be parked at both the start and end
points, and the drive between the two should be about 10 minutes.
Description
Leaving the farm it is a moderate grassy ascent of about 800 feet heading
in an eastwards direction towards High Tove. Once through the stone wall we
reach the top of High Tove (515 meters). This is probably the fell with the
least interesting views as it has a plateau top, but it has unique views of
the Helvellyn Range and of the plateau between High Tove and Ullscarf.
For the rest of the walk we head northwards and navigate swampy terrain
that does not really let up until we reach Walla Crag. There is a gradual
ascent to High Seat (608 meters) which has a surprisingly direct view of
Seathwaite, then the stretch between High Tove and Ullscarf is the most
boggiest and requires a lot of swamp-hopping and peat bog jumping.
The third Wainwright is Bleaberry Fell (590 meters) and it has dominant
views of Keswick and Skiddaw. Then it is a moderate descent down to Walla
Crag (379 meters) which is the smallest and last Wainwright of the walk,
yet has perhaps the best views of the whole walk.
Finally we enter Great Wood and after another moderate descent come out to
the Borrowdale Road. After crossing this we follow various paths until we
come to the end of Derwent Water and at last the finish point which is the
Theatre By The Lake in Keswick.
After the walk there is an AGM meeting at 2.30pm in Braithwaite in the Fell
Side Bistro and Cafe where we will have a late lunch or afternoon tea as
the hobbits say! The drive from Watendlath to Braithwaite is about 20
minutes long.
