It is the responsibility of each walker to make sure they understand where

must contact the walk leader at the latest the day before the walk. You

find a parking space so that walks can start promptly.
Summary
In this October entry of my obscure, unloved and hard-to-get-to
Wainwrights these two Wainwrights, Glenridding Dodd and Sheffield Pike,
fall under the unloved category. While this walk is steep it is also short
and should not take more than four hours. If you are collecting Wainwrights
or want to see a very different view of Helvellyn, this walk is a must.
Nearly everyone goes for Helvellyn, the Helvellyn Range, Grisedale and
Fairfield, but east of the Helvellyn Range are several ridgelines with the
most famous being Striding Edge. Now Glenridding Dodd and Sheffield Pike
are part of the ridgeline that emanates from Stybarrow Dodd. The brilliance
of Glenridding Dodd is its amazing vantage point of Ullswater, and the
brilliance of Sheffield Dodd is seeing many of the eastern ridgelines of
the Helvellyn Range.
Description
Leaving the car park we go along streets of the village of Glenridding
until we pick up the steep path that passes Blaes Crag and goes for the
mountain pass between Glenridding Dodd and Sheffield Pike. Once at the pass
we veer right to reach the top of Glenridding Top (442 meters). The best
views from Glenridding Dodd are of Ullswater, Place Fell and Glenridding
Beck.
Leaving Glenridding Top we follow a very heathery path that runs westwards
pass Heron Pike. The second ascent is not quite as steep as the first, soon
it levels out to the heathery and boggy top of Sheffield Pike. There is a
bit of swamp and peat bog jumping to do to reach the summit.
Upon the summit of Sheffield Pike (675 meters) the views really open up
with a direct view of the eastern side of Helvellyn and there is of course
Striding Edge, Catstye Cam, Stybarrow Dodd and a good chunk of the
Helvellyn Range that can be seen. It’s a very different view of Helvellyn
but it’s a very good profile when seen from the east.
For the descent it is at first gradual aiming for Sticks Gill, and then
once we pick up the track it zig-zags around before reaching Glenridding
Beck. From there it is a quick walk back passing Helvellyn YHA before
returning to the village of Glenridding.
