It is the responsibility of each walker to make sure they understand where
to park. If you are not sure where the car parking/meeting point is, you
must contact the walk leader at the latest the day before the walk. You
should not rely on mobile phones or postcodes. There is often no mobile

nearby but should only serve as a guideline. Please allow plenty of time to
find a parking space so that walks can start promptly.
Summary
This great linear walk is a hike through some of the Northern Fells and it
begins in the hamlet of Bowscale, reaches the Wainwright of Bowscale Fell,
heads directly for Blencathra traversing this mountain from east to west,
passes by the Blencathra Field Centre, descends down to the
Keswick-Threlkeld railway track, and finally finishes at Keswick. This walk
will take about 6 to 7 hours and takes in moorland, tarns, fells,
mountains, woodland and rivers.
The start point is a lay-by next to the hamlet of Bowscale, and the end
point will be Lakeside Car Park in Keswick. Cars will be parked at both the
start and end points, and the drive between the two should be about 20
minutes.
Description
And now for the details! Leaving the hamlet of Bowscale we follow westwards
a track/path that starts off gradual before getting a bit steeper on the
way to Bowscale Tarn. Now this tarn really is hidden, but it is a beautiful
body of water for the corrie sides are steep.
However, to reach Bowscale Fell we will avoid the steep slopes by taking a
path heading first northnorthwest and then bending around, following the
western rim of the tarn below, and heading up and southwards for the top of
Bowscale Fell. The grassy summit of Bowscale Fell (702 meters) has a very
clear view of all the Eden Valley, Skiddaw and of course the top half of
Blencathra.
The path ahead almost aligns perfectly straight from Bowscale Fell to
Atkinson Pike (the northernmost pike of Blencathra) and we follow grassy
paths and trods before reaching the head of the River Glenderamackin. From
here begins the steepest part of the ascent, of about 600 to 700 feet,
through first grassy and then gravelly paths to weave around the steep and
menacing Foule Crag. Once on top of Atkinson Pike the hard work is pretty
much done.
From Atkinson Pike (845 meters) we begin the traverse of the Blencathra
pikes and tops with the highest being Hallsfall Top (868 meters). All I
will say about Hallsfall Top is that the view of Thirlmere and Keswick is
one of the greatest in the Lakes.
For the descent we pass by Blease Fell (804 meters) and then leave the high
ground following a steep and winding path down. There’s no scrambling but
it is steep in a few brief places. Eventually we will reach the Blencathra
Field Centre and finally pass through the first bit of woodland on this
hike until picking up a new path to aim for the eastern foot of Latrigg.
There is no further ascent and Latrigg will be avoided as we pick a road
running though Brundholme until with one final trod we come to the
Keswick-Threlkeld railway track that follows the River Greta.
The walk becomes flat and easy as we head towards Keswick. We leave the old
railway track at Fitz Park, then walk towards the Moot Hall area until at
last coming to the end point of the walk: the Theatre By The Lake. This is
where we get driven back to the start point in Bowscale hamlet. After the
walk a possible place for drinks could be Threlkeld or Keswick.
