Saturday 15th December – Sallows and Sour Howes

Meeting point: Free car park along Green Gate in Troutbeck, Grid Ref: NY412026

Meeting time: 9:45am for 10:00am start

Finish Time: 13:00 (approx.)

Rating: Easy/Moderate – a small circular walk with a bit of a steep incline to begin with.

Miles: 5 miles approx.

Route Description:

From Sour Howes and Sallows, there are really good views back over Windermere lake and towards Wansfell Pike and Kentmere Horseshoe (on a nice day that is!).

From the car park we cross the bridge and briefly head back along the main road, then turn left up a track through some houses. The path then turns left and gradually inclines for a mile. We cross a stile and the path steeply inclines to Sour Howes (483m). From Sour Howes, the path is undulating towards Sallows (516m) and we cross another stile. The return path is down Garburn Pass and we head back to the car park.

Please contact Meg on 07503913200 by 6pm on Friday 14th December to confirm. I will be driving from Kendal so let me know if you would like a lift.

Sallows and Sour Howes from Ings – Sunday 12th November 2017

Start time: 9:15
(Estimated finish time: 15:00)

Leisurely 9 miles / 14.5 km

Title of walk – Sallows and Sour Howes from Ings

Car Parking – next to Watermill Inn just off A591 in Ings, plenty of spaces on side of lanes adjacent to the Inn and just off A591. Its a very good pub as well for the end of the walk.

Meet time – 09:15

Start time – 09:30

Route – From Ings we take the quiet lane to Grassgarth and then follow the bridleway heading towards Kentmere. After a couple of miles we strike westwards across grassy terrain crossing a wall or two to Capple Howe and then onto Sour Howes which has good views of the Troutbeck Valley, we then head NE towards Sallows the second wainwright of the day, heading north from the summit we hit Garburn Pass route down to Kentmere Hall, and then take a very pleasant path alongside River Kent and Kentmere Reservoir to Browfoot and then The Heights making our way back to the road/lane, we started on.

Distance – 9 miles approx

Time – 5- 5.5 hours approx

Grade – Easy to moderate. The route follows roads, lanes and bridleways, but the mostly pathless moorland section over tussocky tough grass makes it moderate in that part, and one or two walls to cross with stiles – not ideal for dogs, but I will seek to avoid having to cross walls as much as possible.
