Moderate 8.5 miles / 13.7 km
Starting at the eastern foot of Carrock Fell, this circular walk takes us past tungsten ore mines and the remains of an iron age hill fort.
Start point: Grassy roadside parking next to Stone Ends Farm, NY 354338, Closest postcode is CA7 8JS
Meet time: 9.15am
Start time: 9.30am
Description: From the starting point walk south on the road to Mosedale village and turn right, signposted Swineside. Follow the lane, passing Swineside Farm and the Roundhouse, and turn right up the mine track to Miller Moss. At the first set of mine workings cross Brandy Gill and follow the track up the hillside before branching left towards Grainsgill Beck as the track turns back right. Walk upstream on the right bank of the beck, with the path being quite boggy in places, cross the tributary Arm o’ Grain stream and continue along Grainsgill. Where the stream flows from the notch on the skyline, bear right on a faint path and head to Lingy hut. Joining the main Cumbria Way path head NNE towards High Pike. From the summit retrace steps and pick up the track crossing the top of the gullies of Drygill Beck and head eastwards across the undulating terrain to Carrock Fell. This track is again boggy and indistinct in places until coming out onto the rocky summit of Carrock Fell, with its band of stones ringing the summit marking the old fort. Descend steeply eastward through rocks and heather. Continue to descend steeply after the tumbled shelter into the gully, taking care on the loose stones, following down to the parking.
