Car Parking/Public Transport: Car Park at Mardale Head, bottom end of Haweswater Reservoir

Rating: Strenuous

Ascent: 880m (approx)

Miles: 9 (approx)

Terrain: Mostly on rocky paths.

Route Description:

Out of the car park we’ll head up Gatescarth Pass and then up on to Harter Fell (778m) for some great views of Haweswater. Then down into Nan Bield Pass and up the other side on to High Street (828m) for more views in a westerly direction across to Hart Crag, Fairfield and the Helvellyn range. Our descent is via Kidsty Pike (780m) although a quick side trip to High Raise (802m) can be made should people wish. Once we’re back down to the reservoir it’s a short walk around and back to the car park.

At the time of writing, weather is good for Saturday. Although, it’s the Lake District, anything can happen! Please check weather and bring appropriate gear and hiking shoes, also including plenty of water if the weather is hot.

Start point: Sadgill in the Longsleddale valley NY483056, LA8 9BE

Car parking: on road side by the bridge over the river Sprint at Sadgill. Parking is limited so please car share.

Description: Longsleddale is almost a forgotten valley, it offers a quiet access to Kentmere Pike and Harter Fell. There are lovely views over Windermere, Morecambe Bay, Cross Fell and Haweswater. We start by crossing the bridge over the river Sprint at Sadgill and turn left to follow the signpost “Stile End”. Then we follow the signpost “Kentmere”. After going through the 3rd gate, we leave the main path and turn right straight away to follow the track up to Kentmere Pike. Following the track, we keep the wall on our right. Then we go through the gate next to a ladder, walking up to Kentmere Pike, keeping the wooden pole fence on our right. Then it is straight ahead to Harter Fell where we will stop for lunch. Then we keep following the fence line heading to Gatescarth Pass and join a very clear stony track. At the junction turn right. We follow this track all the way back to Sadgill.

Distance: Approx  8 miles /  12.8 km

Ascent: Approx 635m

Mardale Head Round – Sunday 22nd April 2018

Mardale Head Round

Start Point: Mardale Head Car Park, Haweswater, NY469107, CA10 2RP

Car Parking: Mardale Head Car Park and side of road (both free)

Start Time: 9.15


From the car park we’ll walk around the head of Haweswater and then begin our ascent of Rigginsdale ridge which takes us above Blea Water to the summit of High Street. We then head south toward Thornthwaite Crag. From here we head east down to the Nan Bield pass before ascending the summit of Harter Fell. This is followed by a descent down to Gatesgarth Pass before climbing Selside Pike followed quickly by Branstree. We then descend to intercept the Old Corpse Road and follow it down to the road that runs alongside Haweswater which we follow back to the car park. This will be a reasonably well paced walk.

Distance: Approx 11 miles

Ascent: 3000ft (ish)

Time: Approx7-9 hours

Grade: Strenuous

Harter Fell and Green Crag – Sunday 24th September 2017

Meet time – 9.15am

Start time – 9.30am

Start/finish – Birks Bridge car park SD235995

Distance – around miles 5 miles

Time – 4 hours

We will start off at Birks Bridge car park and then follow a forestry path until we reach the turn off to the footpath up Harter Fell. The climb up Harter Fell is steep but we will not be pushed for time so can take breaks as and when needed. From the top of Harter Fell we will then drop down and head over to Green Crag. After reaching the summit of Green Crag we will almost double back on ourselves and walk towards Dunnerdale Forest. We will head back through the forest to the car park.

Please be aware that parts of this walk are very boggy so it would be advisable to make sure your boots are waterproof and wear gaiters!
